The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was first introduced in 1955 as a stylish sports car in the VW line-up. Sharing the Beetle’s reliable running gear, it was economical to produce and resembled its famous race winning brethren the Porsche 356. VW contracted Ghia of Turin, Italy to design the car while the coachwork was hand built by the renowned German firm of Karmann. In 18 years, nearly half a million were manufactured including convertible models. Over the years, as with most long lived production models, subtle changes were made to update the outward and interior looks and appeal of the little Ghia’s, as well as running gear improvements. 1973 was the first year for the redesigned bumpers, marker lights and rear taillights. Sadly, the Karmann Ghia’s last year of production was 1974. This Ghia benefits from a fresh metallic paintjob, new leatherette upholstery and new wide whitewall tires. The car is in excellent condition with books and records; It has been driven only 15000 mile since new and has the optional sportamatic transmission. The Karmann Ghia is easily recognizable in virtually every town in America, and there is a strong appreciation amongst collectors alike.
